What "balance" actually means¶
Before the evidence, it helps to be precise about the word. In Chinese, 平衡 (pínghéng) joins 平 (píng, "level, even, flat") with 衡 (héng, "a scale, a weighing beam"). Why tai chi trains balance so well¶
No qi required — the mechanism is textbook physiology. Clinical fall-prevention programs build balance from four ingredients, and tai chi supplies all four:

In the traditional frame, balance is understood through yin and yang — the steady alternation of full and empty through the legs — and through rooting, the image of weight sinking into the ground like a tree. This is best read as a metaphor for the physical skill, not as a separate physiology.
